You can buy anything on eBay these days, including one of those swanky new Windows 8 tablets Microsoft generously gave out to developers at BUILD.
Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 in detail at its latest BUILD developers conference. And in a dual attempt to curry favor and provide attendees with something to work from, the company gave a Samsung tablet with Windows 8 installed on it to everyone who turned up. That’s 5,000 Windows 8 tablets that are now out there in the ether.
While most developers are keeping hold of theirs, as they should do, some have decided instead to get rid at the earliest opportunity. How? By selling their Windows 8 developer tablet on eBay, and charging a fortune for it in the process. At the time of writing there are 16 listings for ‘Windows 8 Developer Tablet‘ on eBay, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $3,500. 10 listings have ended, with the tablets having sold for between $1,800 and $3,000.
What I want to know is who the hell is buying these Windows 8 developer tablets at such exorbitantly high prices? If you want to try Windows 8 right now then you can do simply by downloading the Windows Developer Preview. If you want a tablet with similar specs to this one then buy a Samsung Series 7 slate. It’ll be cheaper (around $999) and not so glitchy.
Hell, just wait a year and change and you’ll likely be able to pick up a Windows 8 tablet produced by your favorite tech manufacturer. What’s the rush, seriously? I like to think of myself as a little bit of a geek, but the people who are bidding on and buying these Windows 8 developer tablets are geeks with too much time on their hands and too much money to burn.
As for the developers who are trying to make a quick buck by selling something given to them for free? Opportunist scum, pure and simple.
